Faith – What is It?

Question:

How do you have faith? I believe in God, I guess, but not really sure what it means to get faith?

Response:

And now what about FAITH?  Books have been written about it.  Let me share some thoughts that come to mind.

Faith is vital to the Christian life.  Hebrews 11:6 says, “And without faith it is impossible to please God, because anyone who comes to him must believe that he exists…”  Words like ‘believe’ and ‘trust’ can be used in place of faith.  So we could say that faith is not a ‘blind leap of faith’ but “a blind commitment to what God is, does and says.”  A very functional Biblical definition of faith is, “Now faith is being sure of what we hope for and certain of what we do not see.” (Hebrews 11:6).

The alternative to faith is ‘trying harder’ on our own.  God is not pleased with that.  He wants us to trust Him more, not try harder.  A true faith or belief in God should be able to be seen in the way we live and behave.  That makes it a functional faith, which is what God desires.  This begins in each individual by receiving Christ by faith.  Then we continue a life of faith in God.  The Christian life is a walk of faith not just a one-time experience.

Is this of some help?  I would love to hear your comments or other questions.

Let your faith grow.  It will, as you increasingly trust God in all circumstances of life, starting with small things at first.
