Evil and Suffering

Why does a loving God allow so much evil and bad things to happen to people?

Why does a loving God allow so much evil and bad things to happen to people?  This is a question many people ask.  First of all, evil is not God’s idea.  He did not create evil (bad things).  Like us, even the writers of the Bible, God’s book, complained about pain and evil, like “…I have more troubles than I can count” (Psalm 40:12), or, “Why is my pain unceasing, my wound incurable, refusing to be healed?” (Jeremiah 15:18).

God did not create the world in the way it is today.  If he had He would not be a loving God.  All the “bad” things come as a result of the selfishness of people.  God desired for people to love Him, but He did not force people to love Him.  He gave mankind the free choice.  In this way, if a person chose to love Him it would be genuine.  This also means that people can chose to reject Him – and many do.  This is where evil comes from – man going against God’s will.  And so man has brought evil upon himself, creating a world that is not normal according to God’s ideal.  Both, Christians and non-Christians are affected by this.  Sickness, and many other bad things, are here because of people going against God.  This is not the way God wanted it.  While this evil force exists we are all caught in it, even those who love God.  But when we have Jesus living in us He promises to go with us through the hard times.

There will come a time when God will once again bind all the forces of evil – a time when there will be no more tears or pain because all things will be made new (Revelation 21:5). Only those who have accepted Jesus will enjoy this new situation.
