Christian, What is One?

Question:

I grew up living in a Christian country and going to church on Easter and Christmas. Doesn’t that make me a Christian?

Response:

Dear ________,

You have a good question. Before you decide to become one it is important to know what a Christian is.

A Christian is simply a person who believes and accepts the truth about Jesus Christ. This is the short answer. If you want a slightly longer explanation continue reading.

God invites all human beings to eventually enjoy a beautiful and perfect place called heaven. The problem is that ever since Adam and Eve disobeyed God in the Garden of Eden, all people have been born in sin. Sin cannot enter heaven, if it did, it wouldn’t be heaven any more. Somebody had to come up with a plan to deal with our sin problem. “Man” has devised many plans (religions) that he hopes will meet God’s requirements, but none do. So God came up with the only acceptable plan. He declared His own perfect Son, Jesus, to be the acceptable sacrifice for all of mankind’s sins. And so He died on the cross as payment for our sins. This brings us back to your question. Anyone who BELIEVES that Jesus died on the cross for his sins and personally RECEIVES Him as Saviour, IS A CHRISTIAN (John 1:12 – The Bible) – a believer in Christ.

This leaves many people with the question, “Then how do I receive Him?” Every person must receive Him by faith, not by doing good things (Ephesians 2:8-9). This step of faith can be expressed or activated through a prayer, where you acknowledge that you believe who Jesus is and what He did for you, and then simply invite Him to come into your life (see Revelation 3:20 – Bible)
