Is Online Evangelism Possible?

Friday, November 6th, 2009

I recently read a blog post that asked, “Is online evangelism possible?” I was a little surprised to see that.  Of course it’s possible!!  Evangelism is a conversation, taking place within a relationship, that intentionally and specifically explains the need for salvation and the means to attain it. Whether it happens online or at Starbucks it’s entirely the same – conversation, relationship, truth, action.

I think where we get into trouble is when people expect the technology to somehow do the work of evangelism for them.  There is no testimony-bot, at least not one that works.  Technology does not evangelize on autopilot.  What technology does is provide a situation, a context, for the conversation to occur in.  Once the conversation has started I have the opportunity to develop a relationship and within that, having gained the right to speak into your life I can start to talk about the Truth.

Does it happen? All the time.

TruthMedia has built PowertoChange.com as our main evangelistic and discipleship site.  You might think that the articles on the site are the point, but they’re not. The articles are a doorway.  People come to the site because they’re interested in a topic.  Once on the site we do everything we can to get them to talk to a mentor, join a chat, request prayer or leave a comment.  The whole site aims to start a conversation because that conversation in the first step in a relationship that can be truly life changing.

I saw it happen just the other day. Someone came to our site to read an article on trust.  She left a comment about the situation she was in with her boyfriend.  She started a conversation.  I commented back to her, sharing some of my own story, and asking if she would like to talk to a mentor.  Now there’s a relationship.  She responded within the hour saying that she would love to talk to a mentor, could I set that up for her.  I did, gladly.  By now she will have heard from the mentor and I can guarantee you that the mentor shared the Gospel with her (we train mentors very carefully and coach continually to ensure this is happening). Whether she comes to Christ or not is her action. Evangelism is happening.

No one has ever walked up to me in the grocery store and said “hey, I think my daughter might be in trouble, can you help?” but I have had people comment on my testimony and ask exactly that.    Conversation, relationship, truth, action – starting the conversation online makes the whole world available to you.

Encouraging Letter

Tuesday, September 4th, 2007

From Lynnette:

Hi Everyone,

I got this letter and donation check from Barbados in my box addressed to TruthMedia. I wanted to share it with you.

Be encouraged!!!

Dear TruthMedia,

I wish to let you know how grateful I am that I discovered your chat room CWT. I am sending you this cheque for $30 in appreciation of the help I received from you during the last year.

Last May, when my daughter walked away from home, I was devastated! The shock almost killed me. Somehow, led by the Holy Spirit, I found your website. A mentor helped me through this difficult time. I am happy to report that since then I visit the chat room every week and I am now a prayer partner.

Relations with my daughter have improved although she refused to let me know her address. We telephone each other and she visits.

My prayer is that she will surrender her life to Jesus and be delivered from an abusive relationship.

Keep up the good work. May God bless you!

Thank you,

Wendy

Encouraging Reply from mentoree

I look forward to hearing from you again. I get so excited when I get home and find that I have an e-mail in my inbox from you. It helps me get through the rest of my day. I’m glad that God helped me find a friend through e-mail. He knows best for all of us. Have a good night, talk to you later.    (Mentoree)

Isn’t this ministry amazing! I was up late catching up on some emails and thought I would take a look at a mentor response that I received today. It’s so encouraging that I had to pass it along.  God is so good!

Another Mentor Story

Wednesday, June 14th, 2006

We talked about mentor stories today and here is one that came this week.  God does inspire our prayers as we pray for people…and their faith grows as they hang on to those prayers…even folded up in a wallet for a year!!

How cool that God let us be a part of this….  Gail

Hi Gail,

I wrote you about a year ago asking for prayer for my husband and I to have a baby. We had been trying for more than a year. You wrote back and had a wonderful blessing of a prayer for us, which I folded and kept in my wallet for when I was down. Most of all, I remember your words in the prayer that I connected with — “quickly Lord!” which made me happy! After a year and a half, my husband and I were happy to find out that we were pregnant! God is so good! (Here she gave details of how both her and her husbands work situations have coordinated perfectly with the timing of this pregnancy.)

My husband and I say that God is a just-in-time God. He’s never early, never late. So God knows what He is doing! Just wanted to let you know the good news and thank you again for your wonderful prayer! It was so nice to know that we had people praying for us.

Blessings!

A Mentor Story

Friday, June 9th, 2006

Hi there! I want to share a story that came through the mentoring side. This gal indicated that she prayed the salvation prayer on a form and was followed up by one of the staff here in the office. She has worked through all the “Knowing Jesus Personally” Bible Studies and this is two of her latest replies.

Be prepared for some warm fuzzies!

She begins…

Hi Grandpa! (her mentor told me the other day he has added a few more grandkids to their family!)

Hope you remember me…

Well first I really want to thank you for all the replies you sent me. They are really so helpful and inspiring. You can’t imagine how happy and satisfied I feel after getting them. Thanks a lot…

Well, I want to ask you one really important question. I’m from India and in our country there are many different kinds of religions and also Gods. I’m not a Christian. Since the time I was very young I was taught to worship many kinds of God and visit these many many religious places all over the country. I was taught to worship idols and consider them as Gods. I’m 18 and all these years I was doing all this. Now after I have visited your site and read these books about Jesus I really feel that whatever I was doing till now was a waste. I’m totally confused about what I shall do and what is the right thing to do. I respect God and Jesus and I do believe that Jesus came on this earth and died for our sins. It really disturbs me now. All these years I was believing in what I was supposed to and now suddenly my perspective has changed. I’m more clear now and I really want to know more about Jesus. But then I feel that I’m paying disrespect to my religion. I’m really very confused and disturbed. Please understand me. I just want to know that whatever I was doing till now, was that wrong?? Is idol worship wrong?? If you can then please please reply to me…I will wait for it. Hope that you will reply and show me the right direction…take care and keep in touch.

Hi Grandpa! How are you? Thank you for replying to my mail. It was really very helpful. I feel light now. All these questions and doubts were really bothering me a lot but after reading your mail I’m very much clear now. And yes, thank you for letting me in your family. It is so sweet of you Grandpa. If I’m lucky enough, I would really like to meet your personally. Anyways having this conversation with through the Internet feels great too.

Well, I’m going to stop idol worshipping now. I now know what the real thing is. All this stuff really throws you away from the real God. Thanks Grandpa for making me understand this. I’m so grateful to you.
